The Amica Duo
The Amica Duo comprises violinists Louisa Till and Jody Smith. They first played together in 2013 as members of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, with whom they performed at Sage Gateshead, Birmingham Symphony Hall, the Barbican, the Royal Festival Hall and the Royal Albert Hall as part of the BBC Proms.
Louisa and Jody both went on to study at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester and in their third year of studies, formed the Amica Duo. The duo share a passion for bringing live music to those who can’t easily access it, primarily giving performances for residents and staff in care homes. The duo perform an eclectic mix of music that includes classical repertoire as well as folk music and songs from musicals.
Jody Smith Biography
Jody Smith is a freelance violinist based in Birmingham. After graduating with a First Class Honours degree from the Royal Northern College of Music, she has enjoyed performing across the UK and beyond with various ensembles. This includes tours to Saudi Arabia and India with the Manchester Camerata, performances of The Nutcracker with Northern Ballet Sinfonia and joining Manchester Collective during their 2022 Winter Residency in Wales.
As a soloist, Jody has performed in venues including Symphony Hall, Brangwyn Hall and Birmingham Town Hall, and was a guest soloist at this year’s Minsterley Eisteddfodd 60th Anniversary Concert. During her time at the RNCM she won the Cowen Prize for Violin and the Norman George Violin Scholarship Competition.
Jody enjoyed several years as 1st Violinist at Lasham Classical Music Festival performing a variety of chamber music, and she recently joined the Sono Ensemble for their project ‘Distant Forces’, which combined contemporary chamber music works with electronics and visuals.
Louisa Till Biography
Louisa is an active violinist and teacher based in London. She studied at the Royal Northern College of Music with Cecily Ward, James Clark and Pavel Fischer, gaining both BMus and MMus degrees. At the RNCM, Louisa participated in projects with the BBC Philharmonic, Manchester Camerata and Chamber Orchestra of Europe, as well as touring internationally to Paris and Montepulciano in Italy.
Since moving to London, Louisa has enjoyed performing with the London Mozart Players and with Baseless Fabric Theatre, for a re-imagined production of Bizet’s Carmen. She also has a keen interest in musical theatre and recently performed at the London Palladium for a concert performance of Camelot.
Louisa is passionate about her work as an educator and for the past year has worked for Music Masters, a charity which provides access to music education for primary school children in London.
Louisa plays a Gragnani violin kindly on loan to her from Benslow Music Instrument Loan Scheme.
